Overview
You can use this document to learn about wildcard DNS records.
A wildcard DNS record redirects any subdomain that you do not have a record for.
You can use a wildcard DNS record to redirect any spelling mistakes in the URL or as a quick solution to ensure that every possible subdomain directs to your website or CDN site.
Create a wildcard DNS record
You can use these instructions to add a wildcard DNS record for an existing DNS zone.
- If you need to create a new DNS zone, see Set up a DNS Zone.
- In the StackPath Control Portal, in the left-side navigation menu, click DNS.
- Locate and select the desired DNS zone.
- In DNS Records, click Add Record.
- Update the blank fields.
- For Type, you can select any record type. The StackPath DNS supports wildcard records for any available DNS record type.
- To learn more about supported record types, see View Supported DNS Record Types .
- For Name, enter an asterisk ( * ). Do not enter a domain name. (See image below.)
- For Type, you can select any record type. The StackPath DNS supports wildcard records for any available DNS record type.
- Click Save.
