Overview
You can use this document to learn how to migrate your third-party name servers to the StackPath DNS so that you can use StackPath as your DNS provider.
Before you begin, you must already have StackPath DNS services enabled on your account, including a DNA zone. To learn more, see Set up a DNS Zone .
This document can be used for:
- GoDaddy
- 123Reg
- Amazon Route S3
- CloudFlare
Step 1: Duplicate DNS records
- In the StackPath Control Portal, in the left-side navigation, click DNS.
- Locate and select the desired DNS zone.
- Next to DNS Records, click Add Records.
- Complete the empty entry, and then click Save.
- Repeat these steps as needed to completely duplicate you existing DNS records into the portal.
Step 2: Update third-party DNS servers
Use these instructions to point your domain registrar to the StackPath name servers. To complete this, you need to obtain the name servers listed in StackPath.
- In the StackPath Control Portal, in the left-side navigation, click DNS.
- Locate and select the desired DNS zone.
- Under My Name Servers, copy the two name servers. You will need this information to paste into your DNS provider.
- Based on your DNS provider, review the following instructions:
DNS provider | Instructions |
GoDaddy |
|
123Reg |
|
Amazon Route 53 |
|
CloudFlare |
In some cases, CloudFlare domains use custom name servers configured for a different domain. In these cases, those domains require an enterprise plan, as well as a request sent to CloudFlare Support that lists the specific custom name servers. To learn how to change your name servers with CloudFlare, please visit the CloudFlare documentation site and see Setting up Custom Nameservers at Cloudflare. As another option, you can keep your DNS management with CloudFlare and simply configure your DNS entries to route traffic to StackPath without the need to change your name servers. To learn more about this option, see Configure DNS with Cloudflare for CDN/WAF. |
Step 3: Verify DNS status
StackPath recommends that you verify your DNS status.
It may take 24 hours (or in some cases 48 hours) for your name servers to globally propagate.
It is important for your DNS to be completely propagated before you make changes to a live website or a CDN. If you prematurely update your website, your users may have issues accessing your website.
- Use a third-party tool, such as What's my DNS?.
- In the field, enter your domain, then select NS as the record type, and then click Search.
- Verify that all locations list the StackPath name server you filed with your registrar. If the list matches, then your site is complete, and any change you make in the StackPath Control Portal will reflect on your live website.
